Our History Since 1925
Hotel Morgan has been a quintessential fixture in the university town of Morgantown, West Virginia since 1925. With its history tightly intertwined with that of West Virginia University, the Hotel continues to leave its mark on students, educators, parents, alumni, and the local community.
1925
When Hotel Morgan opened its doors to the public on October 16, 1925, it was a place of splendor, featuring red satin upholstery, crystal chandeliers, and an opulent ballroom where many of the town’s social functions took place.
1931
With the addition of the adjoining Warner Theater in 1931, Hotel Morgan was THE place to stay. The Hotel hosted many notable names over the following years, including Eleanor Roosevelt in 1934 and President Harry Truman in 1954.
1980
In later years, the hotel became more of a motel. The rooms were too small and outdated, business was down, and the hotel catered to the University dorm overflow and post-football game party-goers.
1999
The property underwent a renovation in 1999, combining modern amenities and technology with its original elegance and charm. The hotel reopened in 2000 with a new color scheme—Mountaineer blue and gold—playing tribute to WVU.
2021
Ready for a refresh, Hotel Morgan underwent another round of renovations, this time to restore the property to its 1920s-era splendor and prestige, reclaiming its rightful place as downtown Morgantown’s premier boutique luxury hotel.
